Approach to Empowerment

At Intentions, our approach to improving communities and empowering individuals in Africa has being holistic and community-based. Here's how:

  1. Holistic: At Intentions, our focus has primarily been on how to alleviate people from poverty, by focusing on providing the very basic necessities of lives in all communities. This can simply be grouped into multiple areas of empowerment, including healthcare, social infrastructural development, youth empowerment, and start-up funding. By addressing these multiple areas of need, means we understand and recognize that individuals and communities need support in multiple areas to truly thrive.
  2. Community-based: Over the years we have come to realize that to improve a community, one needs a community. This is why our secondary approach to empowerment is community-based. It is not enough to simply provide these resources, support or infrastructural development, we try to ensure we improve the conditions of entire communities, by focusing on community-based programs that foster communal inclusive growth. We understand individuals are deeply connected to their communities and that supporting communities as a whole can lead to greater empowerment for individuals.
  3. Participatory: Lastly our programs involve a high level of participation from the communities we work with. Empowerment is not something that can be given to individuals or communities; rather, it must be earned through participation and active engagement. By involving communities in the design and implementation of our programs, we foster a sense of ownership and agency among community members, which can lead to greater empowerment in the long run.

Overall, our approach to empowerment appears to be one that is focused on addressing multiple areas of need, working at the community level, and fostering participation and agency among community members. By taking this approach, the NGO is likely creating more sustainable, long-term change in the communities they work with

Overall, creating a Non-Governmental Organization that rivals The International Red Cross Organization and its impact in Africa requires a comprehensive approach to leadership, management, and implementation. This includes a focus on strategic planning, team building and management, partnerships and collaborations, implementation and monitoring, fundraising, and financial management. It has been possible for us at Intentions to achieve significant impact by taking a holistic approach to empowerment, this has enabled us to have adequate understanding of the issues that has plagued communal development in Africa, thus helping us make a real difference in the lives of people in Africa.
